Mauritius to Introduce New Clinical Guidelines for Healthcare Professionals

Mauritius is set to implement new “Clinical Guidelines” to replace the current “Code of Practice” for medical practitioners, dentists, and nurses.

This decision was reached during a meeting between the council officials and the Minister of Health on August 10.

The move aims to standardise healthcare procedures and treatments across public and private sectors. The Medical Council, Dental Council, and Nursing Council have been tasked with formulating specialised guidelines for their respective fields.

his change follows recent modifications to the regulations of the concerned professions under the Finance (Miscellaneous Provisions) Bill (No. XI of 2023), adopted in July.

Dhunrajsing Persand, Registrar of the Nursing Council, noted the challenging task ahead, particularly in the nursing sector with about 140 procedures to address.

For Dr. Yaarthi Devi Soopal-Lutchmun, President of the Medical Council, this initiative represents a significant step. It’s the first time such “Clinical Guidelines” will be formulated and put into practice. These guidelines could serve as a reference in cases of alleged medical negligence.
