Cardinal Maurice Piat: “When Democracy is in Peril, Citizens Must Stand Up”

Cardinal Maurice Piat, in his final interview to Defi Media before passing on his Episcopal role, reflected on the recent tensions between the government and the Church.

He highlighted the need for citizens “to stand up when democracy is threatened”, while respecting legitimate authorities. He added that democracy relies on the responsibility of citizens, and called for their “courage to raise their voices when democratic principles are undermined”.

Cardinal Piat also insisted on the Church’s critical partnership with the government, highlighting both cooperation and occasional tensions.

He applauds progress in tackling drug addiction and poverty but stressed the need for more comprehensive and accessible support systems.
