Lawyer Akil Bissessur has been granted conditional release after appearing in the Mahébourg court on Monday morning. He will have to provide a bail amount of Rs 50,000. His brother Avinash and his partner Doomila Moheeputh have also been released under certain conditions.
According to reports, the hearings for Akil Bissessur’s release did not take place as scheduled. The representative from the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), Mr. Yakrajsingh Ramsahoj, informed the court that there was no objection to granting bail to lawyer Akil Bissessur.
This decision reportedly did not sit well with the police representative, SP Gungadeen.
He stated that the police still objected to his release, leading to a heated exchange. SP Gungadeen described the DPP’s decision as a “volte-face”. The DPP’s representative clarified that this decision represents the stance of the DPP himself.
Doomila Moheeputh and Avinash Bissessur have also been granted conditional release on bail amounts of Rs 40,000 and Rs 45,000, respectively.
Speaking after his arrest, Akil Bissessur, known to be a severe critic against the MSM ruling party, claimed to be a “victim” as he stands against “human rights abuses”. His loved ones, on the other hand, are “collateral victims”.
“In the span of three years, there have been no less than four provisional charges that have been dropped in court. I have been arrested four times,” said the lawyer.
The arrest of Bissessur brothers and Doomila Moheeputh follows the discovery of 1,022 tablets suspected to be ecstasy during a controlled delivery operation in Dreamton Park, Sodnac on Tuesday, June 20, by the controversial Special Striking Team (SST) of the police.
The package was allegedly addressed in the name of Avinash Bissessur, the brother of lawyer Akil Bissessur, but the delivery address was that of Akil Bissessur himself, according to the police. The package was shipped from Germany. All three individuals claim their innocence.
