Top British lawyer to fight Labour Party's case before Privy Council

The Labour Party and the defeated National Alliance candidate, Suren Dayal have retained the services of Timothy Straker, King’s Counsel (KC), considered in the UK as an expert in electoral law.

According to l’Express, the British lawyer has had working sessions with the Mauritian legal team on the ruling of Supreme Court judges David Chan and Karuna Devi Balaghee to dismiss Suren Dayal’s electoral petition.

Suren Dayal is said to have paid his surety of Rs 150,000 to the Supreme Court and the file is expected to be dispatched to the Privy Council Registry soon.

Party leader Navin Ramgoolam withdrew his electoral petition in Constituency No. 10 and indicated that the party would focus on Suren Dayal’s appeal to the Privy Council.

However, Ramgoolam insisted that the 2019 elections were not conducted in a fair manner.
