Health minister says COVID situation ‘not alarming’

The Minister of Health and Wellness, Dr Kailesh Jagutpal, told Radio Plus/Defi Media that the situation for COVID-19 “is NOT alarming.”
Relying on statistics of his ministry, Dr Jagutpal said that the government’s intensive vaccination programme has yielded results “as only a small percentage of those infected have developed severe conditions linked to the coronavirus.”
He said that official figures show that 511 people died in August 2019 before the outbreak of the pandemic as compared to 520 deaths recorded in August 2021 which is considered to be the highest peak of COVID-19 infections.
