Flood Relief: Rs 250 Raises Eyebrows and Tempers

The process of payment for flood relief has begun on Wednesday, April 24 at the Port-Louis municipality and other Social Security centers across the country.

To date, approximately one thousand families have received Rs 250 per person. However, a large number of them have expressed their dissatisfaction with the amount received.

Victims affected by the torrential rains that hit certain regions of the island on Sunday can benefit from Rs 250 per person.

This initiative by the Ministry of Social Security is exclusively aimed at individuals whose food supplies have been damaged and who have received a police report.

“We started by registering the requests and we paid Rs 250 per person. Approximately one thousand families have already received their money,” explained Ismaël Imrit, Commissioner of Social Security.

He specified that the process will continue on Thursday and Friday. He reminds beneficiaries to present a police report, a identification card, proof of residence, and birth certificates of all family members.

During this process, many people have expressed their dissatisfaction. For them, the Rs 250 amount is insufficient given the cost of living.

“We lost everything. We couldn’t work. The children have nothing to eat and can’t go to school. With Rs 250, we have nothing today. Even the rationed rice is expensive,” said one of the victims.
