Ramzan Abdul Aziim, a twenty-seven-year-old from Mont Ida in Flacq, Mauritius, won a gold medal in the 77,1 Kg / 170 Lbs men’s category at the 2023 African Games on 12 March.

Aziim has a 4-1 amateur MMA record and holds a brown belt in Brazilian jiu jitsu and 2nd Kan in Muay Thai.

Aziim transitioned to MMA three years ago under coach Muhamad Tawfiq Jainbocus at Academie Jaunbocus Tawfiq. He notes the growing popularity of MMA on the island, with five or six clubs now available for athletes.

Despite working in a school, Aziim dedicates his life to his sport, juggling responsibilities to spend time with his family only on weekends.

The biggest challenge for him in participating in the African Games was financial, but eventually, the team received assistance from their federation.

Aziim aspires to become a GAMMA World Champion and compete in different MMA organisations.

He values consistency over motivation in his training approach. Competing in the African Games boosted his confidence in his BJJ game plan and helped him become more relaxed in the ring.
