MITD Job Security: Staff Unite Against ITET Plans

The staff of the Mauritius Institute of Training and Development (MITD) and the MITD Training Officers Union recently held a special general meeting at the Sir Gaëtan Duval Hotel School gymnasium in Ebene.

Concerns addressed regarding the establishment of the Institute of Technical Education and Technology (ITET), which will oversee the technical training sector.

Members of these two unions took the opportunity to ask questions to the chairman of the board, Harrykrishna Vydelingum, and the director of MITD, Sayadaly Maudarbocus.

The director explained that the management and board had requested the Pay Research Bureau to review the case of trainers.

He also mentioned that those who had a diploma would benefit from another complementary one, sponsored by MITD.

The president of the training institution spoke about the organization’s vision, reassuring staff members that “no one will lose their job when ITET welcomes other MITD centers.”

On their part, the union members called on the management for there to be in the future “a single category” of training staff, to end “discriminatory actions” against instructors, and to offer them the opportunity to become Training Officers as “they have been performing the same tasks for years.”

At the beginning of the meeting, the president of the Federation of Parastatal Bodies and Other Unions (PBOU) outlined the context in which MITD (formerly IVTB) was created and its contribution to a diversified economy.

“Today, if we have professionals in multiple sectors, it is thanks to MITD. But things have not always been easy. The struggle to achieve equal pay and privileges as in other sectors of education has not been easy.

We cannot forget the government’s intention to dismantle this organization by handing over all its buildings and infrastructure to private companies,” highlighted Deepak Benydin.
