Outcry in Triolet Over Plans for 2nd Casino, Residents Unite in Protest

Tensions are brewing in Triolet as news of a second casino slated to be built along the main road, amidst shops and religious institutions and schools, has sent shockwaves through the community.

The prospect of a gambling establishment in this location has stirred opposition among some locals, who fear the potential social and economic repercussions.

Whispers of the casino project ahead of the Maha Shivaratree festival had already sparked a wave of indignation among villagers.

Whispers of the casino project began circulating just before the Maha Shivaratree festival, sparking indignation among residents. Rumors intensified when a notice was plastered on a building in the 8th Mile area, only to be swiftly removed following backlash on social media platforms, further fuelling speculation.

“We do not need a casino in Triolet,” voices of dissent echo through the community.

Critics argue that the chosen site for the project is ill-suited, as the daily social and cultural activities in the vicinity are bound to be disrupted.

Concerns are raised about the perceived association of casinos with vices such as drug abuse, alcohol consumption, and prostitution, leading to a tarnished reputation for the region and heightened social issues.

A local merchant, addressing the longstanding issue of traffic congestion in Triolet, laments that the situation is unlikely to improve with the addition of the casino.

“Why not improve parking facilities instead? People are already suffering in Triolet. This will only worsen the situation,” he claimed.

A mother residing in the area questions the authorities’ support for projects like Gambling Houses and casinos, considering the myriad social challenges faced by Mauritian citizens.

“Ten jobs may be created, but a hundred people will end up at the casino,” remarked a mechanic operating nearby, casting doubt on the employment prospects touted by the project.

In a show of dissent, residents have organized a protest march scheduled for Thursday, March 21 at 4 pm starting from the Village Hall, with plans to submit a petition against the casino project to the Prime Minister’s office.
