The upcoming construction of the Urban Terminal at La Vigie, Curepipe, has sparked a range of concerns and questions as the Ministry of Local Government launched a call for tender on February 28 for the project.

While the government and the municipality of Curepipe have high hopes for this project to revitalize the city and restore its charm, the city has been suffering from increasing neglect for several years.

One of the main issues plaguing the city center is the growing presence of rats, due in part to a large garbage bin installed in front of the central market. Merchants and traders operating in the area have raised concerns about the health hazards posed by these pests, as well as the foul smell emanating from newly installed toilets in the vicinity.

The main worry of those working in the city center is what steps will be taken to address these issues while waiting for the construction of the Urban Terminal to commence.

Considering the challenges faced by similar projects in other cities like Quatre-Bornes and Rose-Hill, there are concerns about potential delays in implementing solutions for Curepipe. Dev Rampersad, a merchant at the central market, emphasizes the urgency of addressing the rat infestation, which poses a significant risk to public health.

Business owners in shopping centers such as Arcade Salafa are also expressing alarm at the increasing presence of rodents, highlighting the threat they pose to merchandise and public health. They are calling on authorities to take immediate action to tackle the issue and maintain hygiene standards.

Deputy Prime Minister Steven Obeegadoo’s proposal to transform the Ian Palach Sud station into a garden reportedly further complicates the situation, with questions arising about the timeline for downtown renovations and whether they will effectively address sanitation and pest control issues.

Municipal councilors like Nathalie Goppe and Sammy Chellen are also questioning the impact of the Urban Terminal construction on the city center, suggesting a potential division between the two areas.

As Curepipe grapples with these pressing issues, it remains to be seen how the authorities will navigate the challenges of urban development while ensuring the welfare of residents, businesses, and visitors in the city center.
