72nd Place: Mauritius Slips in Worldwide Internet Speeds

Mauritius may be in the Top 5 countries with the fastest connectivity in Africa, but it is losing ground on the international stage.

According to the Speedtest Global Index, which ranks countries with the best Internet connection, Mauritius is now in fourth place on the continent for mobile Internet connection, behind South Africa, Botswana, and Morocco.

The Ivory Coast rounds out the Top 5.

However, on a global scale, Mauritius ranks 72nd, losing seven places with an average connection speed of 33.87 Gigabits per second. In comparison, South Africa is 56th with 48.11 Gigabits.

At the top of the list, the United Arab Emirates boasts a mobile Internet connection speed of 302.38 Gigabits, almost 10 times faster than Mauritius.

Qatar comes in second (285.84), followed by Kuwait (196.94), China (164.58), and Denmark. The slowest connection belongs to East Timor at 3.75 Gigabits.

When it comes to fixed-line connection speed, Mauritius fares even worse, ranking 98th globally.

Despite dropping three places, it still has a speed of 50.42 Gigabits. However, Mauritius leads the way in Africa for fixed-line connectivity.

Singapore (277.57), Hong Kong (275.17), and Iceland (268.72) top the list for fixed-line connection speed globally.

Cuba has the slowest connection at 181st place, with a fixed-line speed of 2.44 Gigabits.
