Just two weeks after a turtle tragically died in a lagoon at Pointe aux Canonniers, another one has been found dead, this time in the waters of Trou-aux-Biches.

The discovery of the second turtle’s death was made on February 15. Wildlife enthusiasts and marine specialists are outraged at water sports operators damaging marine fauna.

Photos reveal significant injuries to the turtle’s shell, indicating a collision with a boat near the Trou-aux-Biches coast. Unlike the first turtle, which was taken to a veterinary clinic and underwent surgery after being found at sea, this one was killed instantly.

Concerns rise among conscientious divers and marine specialists regarding the increasing number of collisions in the north and the lack of patrols.

One expert highlights the disregard for speed limits in the lagoon, leading to collisions when turtles surface to breathe.

In another incident, a juvenile hammerhead shark was killed and its fins severed in Tamarin waters, sparking outrage on social media.

A photo circulating on Instagram depicted a woman proudly holding the shark with its fins removed. The image provoked anger, especially considering the harmless nature of the baby hammerhead shark.

Sharks, particularly hammerheads, are protected species in Mauritius, listed as critically endangered by the IUCN.

Despite protection measures, the trafficking of fins persists in the region. Authorities in other countries might deploy detectives to investigate such trafficking.
