Bar Council Urgently Seeks Meeting on Financial Crimes Commission Bill

Priscilla Balgobin-Bhoyrul, President of the Bar Council, has urgently requested a meeting with the Attorney General Maneesh Gobin with regards to the Financial Crimes Commission Bill.

The request comes after the bill was introduced in its first reading in the National Assembly.

The Bar Council has invited its members to provide their opinions on the bill and a number of lawyers have already responded.

Concerns have been raised regarding the powers of the Director of Public Prosecutions under the proposed law.

Additionally, questions have been raised about issues of surveillance, data protection, and privacy, as well as the provision allowing searches of homes and other places, including those of legal professionals.

These concerns have led to the call for further discussion and consideration of the bill’s specific sections.
