SME Chambers: The state is pleasing Mauritians at the expense of employers

Maya Sewnath, vice-president of the SME Chambers, expresses concerns over the wage compensation announced by the government.

She believes that this compensation, along with the minimum wage increase, will push SMEs towards closure and harm their competitiveness.

She further claims that the government is pleasing Mauritians at the expense of employers.

Sewnath also highlights the potential for layoffs and the challenges faced by SMEs in the face of global wage increases.

The SME Chambers has requested a meeting with the Prime Minister to address these concerns.

“We would also like to know if foreign workers are affected by these wage increases, knowing that operators already pay for their housing, food, and other expenses.

As for assistance, we would like to know if we will obtain the facilities that large companies have obtained with the Mauritius Investment Corporation (MIC) or if there is a possibility that certain loans/financial assistance will be written off,” she told Defi Media.
