The National Wage Consultative Council (NWCC) recently concluded its meetings and has recommended a minimum wage of Rs 15,000.

Chaired by Beejaye Appanah, the council includes representatives from unions, Business Mauritius, NGOs, government officials from the Ministry of Labour and Ministry of Finance, as well as the University of Mauritius.

The recommendation has been submitted to the Ministry of Labour and is expected to be presented to the Cabinet by Minister Soodesh Callichurn.

Currently, the minimum wage stands at Rs 11,575, but with the inclusion of the General Social Contribution (CSG) allowance of Rs 2,000, it amounts to Rs 13,575.

If approved, the minimum wage in both the private and public sectors will be at least Rs 17,000 (Rs 15,000 as the minimum wage and Rs 2,000 as the CSG allowance).
