Reform Party’s Roshi Bhadain has strongly criticised the opposition’s demand for a 14th month salary for employees in the public and private sectors, stating that it will harm small businesses.

He highlighted the importance of strengthening the economy and warned against increasing expenses that could lead to inflation.

Bhadain also accused the opposition of engaging in a competition to win votes before the upcoming elections, and announced his party’s next meeting to discuss proposed reforms.

Minister Soodesh Callichurn was questioned on this matter by Opposition Leader Xavier-Luc Duval, responding that consultations were required.

However, Xavier-Luc Duval argues that the payment of a 14th month salary should be legally required and not just a request.

He argued that during the Covid pandemic, the government spent Rs80 billion to support struggling private sector companies, but not all of them used the money wisely.

Duval points out that companies are currently making record profits, with the top 19 companies generating Rs42 billion in profits compared to Rs3 billion in 2019.
