The director of the Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU), Carine Charlette-Katinic, may be facing pressure to leave her position prematurely due to internal controversies and pressures.

L’Express cited government insiders as suggesting that opposition against her has been mounting since national security secrets were revealed in the aftermath of the Dhanesh Ellayah case.

It was revealed that Ellayah had bagged a multi hundred million rupee contract from the Prime Minister’s Office for a “national security project”.

Charlette-Katinic’s qualifications have also reportedly come under scrutiny.

The recent revelations surrounding Ellayah’s case have allegedly cast a shadow over her tenure at the FIU, leading to calls for her to step down well before her contract expires in February 2024.

These revelations are said to have have highlighted weaknesses in her leadership and called into question the organisation’s ability to handle sensitive information.

The controversy has also raised concerns about the country’s international reputation.

Calls for an investigation into Charlette-Katinic’s qualifications and allegations of favouritism within the FIU have also been made.

The FIU has responded to these criticisms, stating that Charlette-Katinic has no political affiliations and no connections to the government or parliament.

Despite all of this, the director has not yet responded to the allegations.
