Genocide in Gaza: Mauritius votes for ceasefire, 14 against including US

Mauritius was among the 120 countries that voted in favour of the humanitarian ceasefire during the genocide unfolding in the Palestinian Gaza Strip between Israel and Hamas.

However, 14 countries, including Israel, Fiji  and the US, voted against it, while 45 (including India, UK, Italy and Ukraine) abstained from voting.

The ceasefire aimed to end the ongoing conflict, which has already claimed many lives on both sides, and ensure the supply of food, water, fuel, and electricity to Gaza’s inhabitants.

Despite the resolution, Israel continued its strikes, and the US was also discontent with the absence of “Hamas” and “hostages” in the text.

This was one of the Security Council’s four positioning failures and followed a request from the group of 22 Arab countries to the General Assembly.

Over 6,000 Palestinians have been killed since Israel launched its incursion in Gaza, half of whom were children.
