Xavier-Luc Duval, leader of the opposition, expressed frustration over the absence of parliamentary oversight regarding the controversial developments in Agalega.

“I feel offended as a parliamentarian by the absence of Parliamentary Scrutiny, which is parliamentary oversight on what is happening in Agalega,” stated Xavier-Luc Duval during a press conference this Tuesday afternoon.

The leader of the opposition emphasised the significance of his Private Notice Question (PNQ) during the parliamentary session on Tuesday.

“Several billion rupees worth of constructions are being erected there… But the population and opposition parliamentarians are still in the dark,” he said.

According to Duval, parliamentary oversight is the bedrock of a democratic society.

On the other hand, Paul Bérenger stated that all questions regarding fuel addressed to the Minister of Commerce were withdrawn because Dorine Chukowry is not in the country. The MMM leader deemed this as a lack of respect.

During Tuesday’s session, the Prime Minister Pravind Jugnauth indicated that the runway and jetty in Agalega will be operational by the end of the year.

Jugnauth also asserted that Mauritian and Indian personnel will work on the island of Agalega. He added that India does not wish to make public the confidentiality clause between the two countries.
