Six public buildings in Mauritius still contain asbestos, despite efforts to identify and address such concerns since 2015.

These buildings include the Emmanuel Anquetil building in Port-Louis, which houses approximately 1,130 employees and receives around 3,100 visitors daily.

Plans for the demolition of the Emmanuel Anquetil building were announced during the Budget speech for 2023-2024, with an allocation of Rs 100 million for the demolition and Rs 339 million for its renovation.

The New Government Centre in Port-Louis accommodates 612 employees and receives an average of 140 visitors daily.

Another affected location is the Victoria Hospital in Candos, where 234 employees work and around 840 people visit the various wards daily.

Efforts to address asbestos concerns involve district contractors adhering to strict protocols and relevant legislations for safe removal.
