Privy Council to Deliver Verdict in Dayal vs Jugnauth Case on October 16

The much-anticipated verdict from the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council in the Suren Dayal versus Pravind Jugnauth case will be made public on Monday, October 16.

The judgment will be broadcast live at 1:00 PM British Summer Time, which is 4:00 PM in Mauritius, and subsequently published on the Privy Council’s website.

During the arguments held on July 10, Suren Dayal’s lawyer, Timothy Straker, King’s Counsel, extensively argued that Pravind Jugnauth had made promises as an individual candidate to a specific section of the population.

He argued that by making such promises before the dissolution of Parliament and not after the publication of his electoral manifesto, they were individual promises.

On the other hand, Guy Vassall-Adams, King’s Counsel and lawyer for Pravind Jugnauth, stated that the Supreme Court’s judgment was well-founded and the conclusions were just.

“The Supreme Court was right to conclude that there was no electoral corruption and that a candidate is free to conduct his electoral campaign,” emphasized the lawyer from Matrix Chambers.

The proceedings took place before Law Lords Lloyd-Jones, Sales, Hamblen, Stephens, and Dame Sue Carr.
