Electricity Prices Set to Rise Again for Industrial Sector in 2024

The price of electricity for the industrial sector in Mauritius is set to increase again in 2024, with a 10% hike expected in February of that year.

The Central Electricity Board (CEB) has issued a statement offering eligible industrial customers a 50% reduction on these rate increases if they invest in renewable energy systems.

Economists anticipate that this increase could indirectly impact the cost of living and potentially lead to rising production costs for industries, which could, in turn, affect consumers.

The move is reportedly part of the government’s intention to accelerate the transition to renewable energy sources, although there have been concerns about the conditions and pressures being placed on industries during this transition.

Experts also caution against potential abuse of the new programme and insisted on the importance of rooftop solar panel installations in the success of the energy transition.
