India is reportedly sending 50 military personnel to oversee the construction of a 3 km runway and mini-port in northern Agaléga, near the Seychelles, according to reports from the Hindustan Times.

The Mauritian government, while keeping mum on the project, has entrusted the Indian company Afcons Infrastructure Ltd. with its construction. The development, funded entirely by India, aims to enhance maritime security and safeguard tourism assets. In light of China’s expanding naval presence in the Indian Ocean, India’s strategic move to establish support facilities in Oman and Mauritius underscores growing regional security concerns.

The port of Duqm in Oman is already operational and serves Indian naval vessels, providing maintenance, repair, refuelling, and rest facilities. By 2035, the Indian Navy plans to have a constant presence of at least 135 ships in the Indian Ocean, anticipating heightened regional security needs.
