Five private colleges in Mauritius will no longer receive government subsidies from January 2024.

Parents and guardians will be informed of their children’s reassignment to other institutions by late October.

The Private Secondary Education Authority will oversee the process, considering geographical criteria.

Arvind Bhojun, president of the Union of Private Secondary Employees Union (UPSEE), said that academic standards should not be affected by the transfers.

The colleges facing closure have the option to transition to fee-based private education.

Tensions in industrial relations and failure to meet enrollment criteria are cited as reasons for the closures.

Arvind Bhojun has called for a review of qualification criteria for private college managers.
