Between July 2021 and June 2022, Mauritius disbursed Rs 779.8 million under the Transition Unemployment Benefit to 7,254 laid-off workers, revealed the Ministry of Labour.

The Confederation of Private Sector Workers (CTSP) has raised questions about the surge in unemployment, urging a reevaluation of disciplinary committees.

Reaz Chuttoo, CTSP leader, claimed that disciplinary committees often favour employers over workers.

He has also proposed a revised Workfare Program, saying it requires revision.

Currently, the program offers laid-off workers 90% of their salary for the first three months, followed by 60% and then 30%, or a minimum of Rs 3,000.

Chuttoo proposes that for the initial six months, laid-off workers should receive 90% of their salary, followed by 60% for the subsequent six months.

On the other hand, Pradeep Dursun, COO of Business Mauritius, urges for a contextual understanding of the figures, highlighting that reported cases may not fully represent the employment market’s reality.

Dursun also points out that many reported layoffs involve mutual agreements between employers and employees rather than forced terminations.
