Controversy Erupts Over Appointment At Renewable Energy Agency

The appointment of Martine Gontier as part-time President of the Mauritius Renewable Energy Agency (MARENA) has sparked controversy. Critics are questioning the timing of this appointment as Mauritius grapples with a decline in renewable energy usage, dropping from 21.5% in 2021 to 19.2%.

The government’s ambitious renewable energy targets of 35% by 2025 and 60% by 2030 add to concerns.

The Central Electricity Board’s substantial investments in coal imports further complicate the transition to renewable energy.

The Sustainable Development Commission of the opposition MMM party has also raised questions about the appointment, seeking details about Martine Gontier’s academic and professional background.

“We have learned of the appointment of Miss Gontier, currently a legal officer at the URA, as part-time chairperson of the MARENA board for a period of 2 years. Given the significant shift from officer to chairperson, we would like to obtain details about Miss Gontier’s academic and professional background so far, especially since she will be remunerated with public funds.”
