Mauritius Parliamentary Private Secretary Resigns Amidst Corruption Allegations

Rajanah Dhaliah, the representative of the MSM ruling party for Constituency No. 7 (Piton-Rivière-du-Rempart), has reportedly resigned from his role as Parliamentary Private Secretary (PPS). The decision was communicated to the Acting President of the Republic in a resignation letter submitted on Monday, Defi Media reported.

Despite stepping down from his PPS position, Dhaliah will continue to serve as a Member of Parliament in the National Assembly, the newspaper said.

This week marked a pivotal moment for PPS Dhaliah. On Saturday, during the party’s central committee meeting, the leader of the MSM and Prime Minister Pravind Jugnauth reportedly expressed his frustration over Dhaliah’s refusal to respond to summons by the Independent Commission Against Corruption (ICAC).

Allegations of corruption regarding the lease of land near Grand-Bassin to the Eco Deer Park Association  and what is known as the ‘Black Label and Stag Party scandal’ have cast a spotlight on Rajanah Dhaliah.

Represented by his lawyer, Ravi Rutnah, Dhaliah intends to appeal to the Privy Council to avoid the Icac summons after his injunction request was dismissed by a judge.

Pressed by reporters’ questions, Me Rutnah earlier threw the ball into court of Attorney General Maneesh Gobin.

“Go seek answers from the minister who holds the power. Go ask those with the authority to allocate land. Seek the truth from Gobin himself,” he had claimed.
