Mauritius' Competition Commission Launches Inquiry into Engen Acquisition

The Competition Commission has initiated an in-depth investigation into the potential acquisition of Engen Limited by Vitol Emerald Bidco Propriety Limited, a subsidiary of Vivo Group.

Vivo Group operates in Mauritius under the name Vivo Energy and markets products under the “Shell” brand. Engen Limited primarily operates in Mauritius through Engen Petroleum (Mauritius) Limited.

According to the Competition Commission, there are grounds to believe that the proposed acquisition could lead to a significant concentration of market shares in various goods and services sectors in Mauritius.

“This may affect the state of competition in relation to the supply of mogas & diesel, jet fuel, marine fuel, lubricants, and retail sales of liquified petroleum gas,” it said.

The Competition Commission has invited interested parties to express their views on this matter.
