Transfers, promotions in Mauritius Judiciary raises eyebrows

A wave of transfers and promotions has hit the judiciary, with over a dozen magistrates affected by the decision of the Judicial and Legal Service Commission.

Among them, one name stands out and is raising eyebrows: Magistrate Vidya Mungroo-Jugurnath. The former Senior District Magistrate at the Bambou court has been transferred to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).

Vidya Mungroo-Jugurnath previously held the position of Senior District Magistrate at the Bambous court. She presided over the judicial inquiry into the death of former MSM agent Soopramanien Kistnen at the Moka court.

She made headlines for dismissing the provisional drug trafficking charges against lawyer Akil Bissessur and issuing strong criticisms against the Special Striking Team (SST).

Prior to her transfer, she was presiding over the money laundering case against Jean Hubert Celerine, also known as Franklin.

Another magistrate, Vignesh Ellaya, is also on the list of transfers. He had previously refused to sign the search warrant at the home of lawyer Sanjeev Teeluckdharry’s mother-in-law.
