COVID-19 debts wiped clean: No need to pay back Wage Assistance Scheme

The Finance Minister of Mauritius, Renganaden Padayachy, announced the cancellation of all unpaid debts, including penalties and interest, related to the COVID-19 Levy.

The exact amount let off was not disclosed, but it is believed to be several billions of rupees.

The decision reportedly aims to alleviate financial difficulties for companies and support their recovery efforts.

Pradeep Dursun, COO of Business Mauritius, reportedly expressed support for the measure, stating that it would help businesses invest and revive their operations.

The Wage Assistance Scheme (WAS), implemented during the pandemic, provided financial support to private sector employees.

The Mauritius Revenue Authority (MRA) disbursed Rs 20.75 billion under this scheme.

Repayment of the assistance was required once the situation improved, and while some companies fully or partially repaid the amount, others were not able to do so.
