A citizen collective in Mauritius has presented an alternative proposal to the controversial Smart City project by PR Capital (Mauritius) Ltd in Roches-Noires.

The collective aims to establish a sustainable and inclusive nature park in collaboration with local communities, NGOs, and environmental organisations in the area.

Companies such as Eclosia, IBL, Currimjee, and Scott have expressed their willingness to provide funds and expertise to preserve the ecologically sensitive site and promote sustainable development in Roches-Noires.

The project aligns with the national biodiversity conservation efforts and aims to connect the green space with other natural areas on the island.

Plans include creating walking trails and educational programs to allow visitors to explore the wetland area, establishing an incubator for environmentally-focused startups, and a research and development hub to attract students interested in biodiversity.

The collective also aims to facilitate economic activities that benefit the village.

The proposal involves protecting a privately-owned land spanning 358 hectares, which has seen unsuccessful attempts at real estate development.

Currently, the assets of Roches Noires Resort and Residence Ltd are held by two banks, BPCE and ABSA, with Mr. Twaleb Butonkee from Deloitte appointed as the administrator.

The collective has expressed interest in taking over the site.

The site includes ecologically sensitive areas, marshes, a lagoon, and mangroves, which play crucial roles in managing water and mitigating climate change.

The collective plans to establish a management structure to ensure the long-term restoration and protection of the site’s flora and fauna.
