Rs 20,000 for every 18 yr old: A bold move or just a clever election strategy?

The 2023/2024 budget announcement by the Finance Minister Renganaden Padayachy to grant Rs 20,000 to individuals upon turning 18 has sparked controversy and raised questions about its underlying motives.

The scheme, set to benefit an estimated 50,000 young people this year, has led some to speculate whether it is a strategic move to garner support from future voters.

Jayen Chellum, Secretary-General of the Association of Consumers in Mauritius, expressed skepticism regarding the timing of the initiative.

He believes it may be an attempt to sway young voters ahead of upcoming elections, cautioning against allowing the monetary incentive to unduly influence their political decisions.

Chellum called for responsible financial management and urged parents to guide their children in making wise choices with the funds.

The initiative, known as the Independence Scheme, was introduced in the 2023/2024 Budget as part of the country’s 55th anniversary of Independence celebrations.

It aims to empower young adults as they transition into adulthood, providing them with financial assistance to pursue educational opportunities, secure employment, or explore entrepreneurial ventures.

During a media briefing, the Finance Minister defended the initiative, highlighting the importance of investing in their future, whether it be through purchasing essential equipment, covering educational expenses, or fostering skills development.

The Minister also expressed concern about the desire among some young people to leave Mauritius, and he hopes the grant will motivate them to stay.
