Parliament Comedy Show: MPs expelled, Opposition Leader won't ask questions

Tuesday’s parliamentary session in Mauritius was marked by heightened tensions and expulsions of three MPs – Labour’s Osman Mahomed and Patrick Assirvaden and the MMM’s Joanna Berenger. The latter was suspended for three sessions.

The Leader of the Opposition, Xavier-Luc Duval, expressed frustration with the PM Pravind Jugnauth’s lengthy responses to questions, leading him to announce that he would not pose any further questions.

The session became heated when Jugnauth read excerpts from a document instead of providing specific answers to the Opposition’s queries regarding a World Bank report on the port’s operations.

The Speaker reportedly allowed Jugnauth to continue citing extensive portions of the document, causing further discontent among the Opposition.

Throughout the session, exchanges between MPs from different parties grew increasingly heated, with accusations and sarcastic remarks being exchanged.

Several opposition MPs were also reprimanded by the Speaker for their conduct. Overall, the session was characterised by tensions, interruptions, and expulsions, highlighting the increasingly intense political climate in the country.
