A century of love and resilience: Mother of 15 celebrates 100th birthday

In the small village of Khoyratty, Mrs Sarrosut Nehenny just celebrated a milestone that few are fortunate enough to reach – her 100th birthday.

Born on 03 June 1923, at Union Park Estate, Mrs Nehenny’s century of life was filled with extraordinary experiences and cherished memories.

Sarrosut Nehenny, born Munshi, came from a close-knit family. She had one brother and two sisters, all of whom have passed away. Her father served as a policeman, while her mother unfortunately passed away after giving birth to her.

Despite not having the opportunity to attend school, Mrs Nehenny’s spirit and determination shone brightly throughout her life.

At a young age, she married Mr Narain Nehenny, a hardworking shopkeeper. Mrs Nehenny devoted herself to being a loving wife and mother, raising a total of 15 children. Although the journey wasn’t always easy, she persevered with strength and resilience.

Today, she has one son and four daughters by her side, a testament to the love and bonds that have stood the test of time.

Despite becoming a widow at 57, she remained a pillar of strength for her family. She is now a grandmother to 22 grandchildren and a great grandmother to 26 great-grandchildren.

Mrs Nehenny has embraced a vegetarian diet, relishing all kinds of fruits. She has a special fondness for snacks, especially puff pastry rolls.

Television serves as her window to the world, bringing moments of entertainment and connection into her home.

She is the166th centenarian in the Republic.

Her birthday was organised by the Ministry of Social Integration, Social Security and National Solidarity to honour the new centenarian. On this occasion, Mrs Nehenny received, from the authorities, a cheque amounting to Rs 26,203; another one to the tune of Rs 10,000 from the National Solidarity Fund; a mixer grinder; a bouquet; a centenarian medal; and a certificate.
