The price of booze and cigarettes in Mauritius shoot up by 10 percent

Starting from Saturday, June 3, an increase in the prices of alcoholic beverages and cigarettes will come into effect. This decision was made following the budget presentation by the Minister of Finance, Renganaden Padayachy, in the National Assembly on Friday, June 2.

Regarding excise duty rates on alcoholic products, the following rates will be applicable starting from June 3, 2023:

  • Cigars (per kilogram) will cost Rs 23,510.
  • Cigarillos (per thousand) will be priced at Rs 13,728.
  • Cigarettes (per thousand) will be priced at Rs 6,807.

In terms of excise license fees for wholesale and retail sales of alcoholic products, the annual license fees for the sale of alcoholic products will be increased.

Wholesalers will have to pay between Rs 6,000 and Rs 18,000, while retailers will need to pay between Rs 1,000 and Rs 6,000 for license fees, and Rs 2,000 to Rs 12,000 for retail license fees.
