Controversy: Appointment of new Director of Audit raises questions of impartiality

The appointment of Dharamraj Paligadu as the new Director of the National Audit Office has stirred up controversy, with the Leader of the Opposition, Xavier-Luc Duval, claiming he did not approve of the decision, as required by law.

The appointment was reportedly made after consultation with both the Prime Minister Pravind Jugnauth and the opposition leader, but Duval has raised concerns about the process, insisting that he did not give his nod, l’Express reported.

Prior to this appointment, Paligadu was the ‘Deputy Financial Secretary’ at the Ministry of Finance.

He also held management positions at at the MBC/TV and MauBank, and currently serves on several boards, including those of the Mauritius Housing Company and Mauritius Multisports Infrastructure Limited.

“The appointment has raised concerns about possible conflicts of interest, and whether Paligadu will be able to remain impartial in his new role.”

The last report of the National Audit Office was highly critical against government expenses and wastage of public funds.
