The U.S slams Mauritius over 'significant human rights issues'

The United States Department of State has hit hard at the Mauritian Government, highlighting significant human rights issues and a culture of impunity.

In its 2022 Human Rights report, the US Department of State noted “cruel, inhuman, and degrading treatment by the government, arbitrary arrest; arbitrary or unlawful interference with privacy; serious restrictions on freedom of expression and media, including censorship; serious government corruption; lack of investigation of and accountability for gender-based violence; and crimes involving violence or threats of violence targeting members of racial or ethnic minority groups”.

The report added that the Mauritius government “did not always take steps to prosecute and punish officials who committed abuses or engaged in corruption, whether in the security services or elsewhere in the government. Enforcement of prosecution and punishment was inconsistent and sometimes politically influenced, resulting in impunity.”
