New report confirms climate change is 'worse' than previously predicted

The latest report of the (IPCC) Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change has confirmed that the situation is worse than previously predicted, according to oceanographer and environmental engineer Vassen Kauppaymuthoo.

“We have a decade left to reduce our greenhouse gas emissions by at least 43% compared to 2019 emissions,” he told Defi Media.

“In Mauritius, despite the creation of the Ministry of Climate Change, we have not taken the necessary steps and concrete actions to address the impacts of climate change. We have always confined ourselves to maintaining a postcard image of the country to attract investors and tourists,” he deplored.

He also found unacceptable that the controversial Roches-Noires IRS project could be brought back on the table despite the fact that the area is one of the last to be naturally resilient to the adverse effects of climate change.
