A pet owner in Bambous, Mauritius, has a cat that just gave birth to four baby kittens, one of which was born with what appears to be two heads.

The first time the family members saw it, “we got scared. We had never seen something like this before,” cat owner Nadine Cupidon was cited as telling Le Mauricien newspaper.

The kitten, named “Janus”, after the Roman god with two faces, was reportedly born with two noses, four eyes, two mouths, but only four legs.

A Janus Cat is a rare genetic mutation caused by excess protein production while in the womb.

Vets reportedly told the owner they had never seen a mutation so rare.

The rare phenomenon reportedly attracted a lot of curious people in the area.

Although there is little data, Janus cats historically have a low survival rate. Many are unable to live past the first 12 hours.

But Janus almost defied the odds, it died a day later.
