Teenager dies from COVID-19, death toll doubles in one week

Latest official figures just released state that an additional 27 people died of COVID-19 over the past week (17-23 February). This represents almost a 100% increase to the average 12 deaths attributed to COVID-19 over previous weeks.

On the same day the figures were released, a 15-year-old teenager became the most recent person to die as a result of COVID-19.

Meevin Veerapen, a student of Universal College in Rivière-du-Rempart, passed away on Sunday, 25 February, at the SSR National Hospital, in Pamplemousses.

According to Defi Media, the teenager was taken to hospital by his father because he was not feeling well.

He was reportedly pronounced dead on arrival. Tests confirmed he was positive for COVID-19.

Defi Media cited the mother as stating that the teenager was doubly vaccinated with Pfizer and didn’t have any underlying health conditions.

An autopsy was scheduled this Saturday to determine the cause of his death.

As at 23 February 2022, there were 2,564 active cases of COVID-19, out of which 12 were admitted at the New ENT Hospital.

There were 2,257 active cases in Rodrigues and15 persons were admitted at Mont Lubin Treatment Centre.

Ten Oxygen concentrators and three ventilators have reportedly been sent to Rodrigues as well as medical gas cylinders, medicines and medical disposables.
