Schools to remain open, says Education Minister

Minister of Education, Leela Devi Dookun-Luchoomun has countered calls to close schools, stating that it is high time for the children to be able to go back to classes.
“They have to go back to the school environment for their mental balance,” she was quoted as telling Defi Media, adding that her ministry will ensure the safety of children through the vaccination program.
Her reaction comes after health experts, rectors and parents called to close schools amid the COVID-19 surge.
“Certainly some children have been tested positive. Everyone should take the necessary precautions,” the minister responded.
The Minister argued that the number of positive children in the various institutions does not exceed 4%.
“It somewhat reflects the level of contamination within the community. If a child is sick, parents should take precautions and not send the child to school. It is extremely important that everyone takes responsibility.”
