Mauritius issues Class 2 warning over tropical cyclone Emnati

Mauritius Meteorological Services have issued a cyclone warning Class 2 with tropical cyclone Emnati packing gusts of 190km per hour at its centre and set to be a potential threat.

The cyclone Emnati had been wobbling in the vicinity of St Brandon on Saturday morning with not much change in its intensity, the Met Office said.

But it is currently making its way towards Mauritius.

At 10 am, it was centred at about 460 km to the north-north-east of Mauritius near latitude 16.0 degrees south and longitude 59.0 degrees east. It is moving in a south-westerly direction at  a speed of about 17 km/h.

On this trajectory, tropical cyclone Emnati continues to approach our region and represent a potential threat to Mauritius.

Severe weather associated with active cloud bands of Emnati will persist over the whole island and wind gusts are expected to increase and reach 100 km/h in the afternoon.

However, wind gusts may exceed 110 km/h over the high grounds and in certain exposed areas.

The public in Mauritius is advised to complete all preliminary precautions, the Met Office said.

Outer cloud bands of Emnati are influencing weather over Mauritius with intermittent rain, becoming moderate to heavy at times with thunderstorms.

Wind will blow from the south-east at a speed of about 50 km/h with gusts of 90 -100 km/h in the afternoon, strengthening further in the evening.

The sea will be very rough with swells of the order of 5 metres becoming gradually high during the day.

The public has been advised not to venture at sea.
