Compulsory medical check-up to see if you're fit to drive

Motorists and motorcyclists have been warned: You will soon be medically tested on your driving ability.

The mandatory test was announced by PM Pravind Jugnauth at the 5th meeting of the National Road Safety Commission earlier this week.

New amendments to the law authorising this medical examination are being drafted by the Office of the Attorney General.

Once finalised, the regulation will be presented to the National Assembly.

The Road Traffic Act will also be amended to provide for a ban on driving under the influence of drugs. The police are now equipped to detect drugs in urine.
