Emergency stabilisation works are set to begin this Thursday, 30 April, at Tamarin Public Beach following a significant surge in coastal erosion, the Ministry of Environment, Solid Waste Management and Climate Change has announced.

The urgent intervention, scheduled to commence during low tide, aims to stabilise the shoreline and mitigate immediate risks at the river mouth.

The crisis has been attributed to a combination of natural fragility and a specific instance of “unauthorised human intervention” several months ago, which disrupted the area’s ecological balance.

Rapid Response Measures

The decision follows a high-level consultative meeting held on Wednesday, 29 April, involving a broad coalition of stakeholders including the Beach Authority, the Mauritius Oceanography Institute, and the Forestry Service.

The immediate works programme includes:

  • Targeted Desilting: The controlled creation of a passage at the river mouth to facilitate water flow.
  • Coastal Stabilisation: The planting of native trees suited to the local environment.

A technical team will remain on-site to supervise operations and monitor environmental impact in real time.

Long-term Outlook

While the current works are described as “rapid and temporary,” the Ministry confirmed that more sustainable, long-term technical solutions are currently under study.

Following site visits involving both local authorities and residents, officials issued a stern reminder that any unauthorised interference with the coastline is strictly prohibited.

The Ministry has called for “collective responsibility” to protect the fragile natural site as permanent strategies are developed.
