Veteran politician Paul Bérenger has formally announced the inception of a new political movement, Konba Militan Progresis, during a public address on Saturday, 25 April at Ambrose Street.

The announcement marks a significant shift in the local political landscape, with Bérenger confirming that a founding congress will be held in two weeks to finalise the movement’s name and operational framework.

While “Konba Militan Progresis” currently enjoys a broad consensus, the leader noted that a final decision is pending.

Organisational Structure and Growth

The movement’s proposed architecture is set to include:

  • 20 Regional Committees
  • A National Committee
  • A Political Bureau

Bérenger revealed that the movement has already seen a rapid surge in interest, with 1,361 registrations recorded since Thursday, 23 April.

While the official colour of the party remains undecided, the chosen symbol will represent solidarity.

Municipal and Parliamentary Shifts

The launch has triggered immediate ripples in local government. In Beau-Bassin/Rose-Hill, Mayor Gabriella Batour has announced her resignation from the chair after losing her majority, though she will retain her seat as a councillor.

In contrast, Bérenger stated that MMM councillors in other municipalities will remain in their current positions.

At the parliamentary level, Bérenger described the current situation as a “status quo.”

He reminded the public that the appointment of the Leader of the Opposition remains the prerogative of the President of the Republic, though he noted that Chetan Baboolall is prepared to step into the role.

Allegiances and Exclusions

Addressing future memberships, Bérenger struck a welcoming but firm tone, stating there would be space for all who wish to join, with notable exceptions.

He explicitly ruled out any association with figures such as Steven Obeegadoo and Alan Ganoo.

Regarding the mandatory constitutional role of Deputy Prime Minister, Bérenger dismissed recent comments by Navin Ramgoolam as “constitutional nonsense.”

He further emphasised the importance of vetting candidates for high office, specifically mentioning the need to choose individuals who “do not represent a risk” in reference to the potential nomination of Arianne Navarre-Marie.

May Day Commemorations

Looking ahead to 1 May, the movement will forgo traditional rallies in favour of a pilgrimage.

Homage will be paid to several historical figures of the nation, including Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam, Sir Anerood Jugnauth, Fareed Muttur, Basdeo Bissoondoyal, and Emmanuel Anquetil.
