NAIROBI – French President Emmanuel Macron has formally welcomed Mauritius’ decision to join a Franco-Mexican initiative aimed at curbing the use of the UN Security Council veto during mass atrocities.

The endorsement came during the closing ceremony of the Africa Forward summit, held in the Kenyan capital on 11-12 May.

Addressing delegates, President Macron praised the Mauritian government’s commitment to the voluntary restriction of veto powers when the United Nations is faced with large-scale humanitarian crises.

High-Level Discussions

Following the conclusion of the summit’s official proceedings yesterday evening, Mauritian Prime Minister Navin Ramgoolam held a private meeting with the French President.

The encounter provided an opportunity for the two leaders to engage directly after a summit focused on the future of African development and international cooperation.

Global Diplomacy

The initiative supported by Mauritius encourages the five permanent members of the UN Security Council to refrain from using their veto power in instances where mass atrocities are documented.

By adhering to this proposal, Mauritius aligns itself with a growing movement seeking to reform international response mechanisms to global crises.
