Mauritius High Seas Warning: 4-Metre Swells Expected from 1 to 2 May

A high seas warning has been issued for Mauritius as energetic south-westerly swells prepare to batter the Mascarene region, with waves expected to reach heights of four metres.

The warning, released by the national meteorological station at 16:00, Thursday 30 April, comes into effect at 04:00, Friday 1 May. The alert is scheduled to remain in place until at least 04:00 on Saturday 2 May.

Meteorologists have warned that sea conditions will gradually deteriorate, becoming “very rough” as the swell arrives.

The most significant impact is expected along low-lying coastal areas in the west and south of the island, where heavy breakers are likely to crash ashore, particularly during high tide.

In response to the deteriorating conditions, authorities have issued a firm safety advisory.

Fishermen, pleasure craft operators, and the general public are being urged to avoid all maritime activities for the duration of the warning.

Furthermore, officials have advised against venturing onto beaches during high tide cycles due to the increased risk of tidal surges and dangerous waves.
