Arrest of political dissidents was 'illegal', Court strikes off charges

A Port Louis Court has struck out the police case against members of the Linion Pep Morisien (LPM), who were accused of illegal demonstration against the Police Commissioner in front of the Police Headquarters in Port Louis in early March.

Indeed, the Intermediate Court ruled that the arrest and charges against eight members of the LPM, who were asking for the resignation of Police Commissioner Anil Kumar Dip, do not hold up. Especially since the demonstrators had respected the limit of people allowed for a rally, i.e. a maximum of twelve.

“The police acted illegally,” commented Rama Valayden of the LPM. “We are entering a serious period where repressions are being carried out against opponents of the regime.”
