Mauritius Sea Alert: 3-Metre Swells Batter Southern and Western Coasts

Published

on

Boats and swimmers have been advised to stay out of the water along the southern and western coasts of Mauritius as heavy swells and strong winds batter the island.

The weather service has issued a formal warning against all excursions into the open sea and the lagoons of the West and South.

A moderate and slightly unstable airflow is currently dictating local conditions, resulting in rough maritime conditions with southwest swells reaching heights of 3 metres beyond the reefs.

Intermittent Rain and Fog

Island residents should expect cloudy periods and intermittent rain throughout Friday morning, particularly in the East, South, and across central high ground.

Authorities have also warned of fog patches likely to develop in elevated areas, potentially impacting visibility for motorists.

While showers are expected to ease slightly during the afternoon, further cloud cover arriving from the southeast is predicted to bring a return of intermittent rain overnight.

These conditions will be most prevalent in the East, South, and across the central plateau.

Temperature and Wind Outlook

Southeasterly winds are maintaining a steady pace of 20 km/h, though gusts could reach speeds of up to 50 km/h in exposed areas.

Temperature forecasts for the period include:

  • Coastal Regions: Highs of 27–29°C; Lows of 22–24°C.
  • Central Plateau/Highlands: Highs of 23–25°C; Lows of 18–20°C.

The current weather pattern is being driven by a persistent moderate airstream, with no immediate indication of the maritime warnings being lifted before the swell subsides.
