8 Breaches Identified as Ministry Cracks Down on Non-Essential Electricity Usage

Ministry of Energy officials have identified eight infractions across the country while intensifying a crackdown on non-essential electricity consumption.

The enforcement surge follows the introduction of the Energy Efficiency Regulations 2026.

Since the legislation came into force, the Ministry has received 27 formal complaints regarding wasteful power usage.

National Inspections

A technical committee is currently tasking itself with analysing every report, categorising cases by priority level before deploying field inspectors.

So far, 22 sites have been scrutinised in regions including Port-Louis, Plaines Wilhems, Grande-Rivière-Nord-Ouest, and Bambous.

The inspections, which frequently continue into the evening to ensure compliance, have targeted a variety of high-profile locations.

Amongst those monitored were the Tribeca Mall, Victoria Urban Terminal, Caudan Arts Centre, and the Quatre-Bornes Municipality.

Institutions Noted for Infractions

The eight breaches recorded to date span commercial businesses, educational institutions, and public infrastructure.

Specific sites identified in the reports include various shopping centres and a state college.

In response to the findings, several organisations have already initiated remedial actions. Authorities confirmed that Hermes Properties, Victoria Urban Terminal, and Palma State Secondary School have announced corrective measures to align with the new standards.

Continued Vigilance

Despite these early corrections, the Ministry of Energy maintains a high level of vigilance.

Officials have signaled that inspections will persist to ensure that all enterprises and public institutions adhere strictly to the regulations governing non-essential energy use.
